Antique Silver BISCUIT BOXES description:
A covered receptacle for serving biscuits or cookies with a tight fitting lid.
Antique Silver BISCUIT BOXES history:
The first biscuit boxes were Victorian and were mostly made after the 1860s. The vast majority were made in silver plate. They are still being made today.
Antique Silver BISCUIT BOXES design:
Often cylindrical or oval with straight sdes, with a tight fitting hinged lid, and sitting on a base plate for ease of passing around. They were often decorated with engraving or chasing based on the designs of the period. Many were made from a combination of glass and silver but these are getting rarer as the years go by. The most unusual ones are based on folding designs, either double, or even rarer, triple.
Antique Silver BISCUIT BOXES collectors note:
As most of the biscuit boxes were silver plate it is very important to check the condition of the plating. Sterling silver boxes are quite rare and command fairly high prices. There should be a hallmark on any removable piece such as the lid and this should be original to the main body. They must also be undamaged with good clear hallmarks, crisp detail, and well-fitting tight hinges.
