Antique Silver CREAM SAUCE BOATS description:
A boat-shaped receptacle for serving sauces, gravy, and cream.
Antique Silver CREAM SAUCE BOATS history:
Early sauce boats from the 1720s are now very rare. They were made throughout the Georgian period, then dipped slightly in popularity in the Victorian period, and are still made today.
Antique Silver CREAM SAUCE BOATS design:
Early sauce boats, often called gravy boats, were double-lipped sitting on a pedestal foot, and were used with gavy ladles. Later boats only had one lip with a scroll handle opposite and sat on either three feet or a pedestal foot, and were designed more for pouring. There were many styles made depending on the period, with applied borders, cast feet and handles, and many other styles varying from very plain Art Deco through to very ornate cast styles from the Rococo period.
Antique Silver CREAM SAUCE BOATS collectors note:
Check closely where the handle and legs are attached to make sure that they have not been damaged and repaired. Shaped edges on the main bodies may have splits and/or repairs. Also check the main body for thin areas where crests and monograms have been erased. Early sauce boats have hallmarks underneath and in all cases should be clearly marked.
