Antique Silver PORINGERS description:
A porringer is a two-handled bowl, often with a lid, used for holding porridge, caudle (a mixture of milk, broth & eggs) or posset (a mixture of spiced hot milk and wine, or sherry), the latter two often given to babies or convalescents.
Antique Silver PORINGERS history:
The earliest known examples of silver porringers date from the middle of the 17th century and they are still being made today (but not for their original intended use). They are often called caudle cups or posset pots.
Antique Silver PORINGERS design:
The silver porringers were always round with opposing handles, and some having matching lids with finials. Decoration varied from fairly understated half-fluting to very ornate chased floral work reflecting the style of the time.
Antique Silver PORINGERS collectors note:
The level of craftsmanship and their aesthetic qualities determine the value of antique porringers. Very early ones command high prices but they must be totally original. Look out for thin cartouche areas, fractured rims, and replaced cast handles. Early porringers with hallmarked bases should be regarded with suspicion.
