Antique Silver GOBLETS description:
A goblet is a type of drinking vessel consisting of a tapered bowl sitting on a pedestal foot.
Antique Silver GOBLETS history:
The earliest known examples of antique silver goblets or wine cups date from the 15th century. Early examples were ecclesiastical in origin. The introduction of glass in the late 17th century meant that their numbers were reduced from this time, but they were still made in relatively large numbers in the Georgian/Victorian periods and are still being made today.
Antique Silver GOBLETS design:
The vast majority of antique silver wine cups had a deep tapered bowl sitting on an elongated pedestal foot with spreading base. Most were round in cross-section, and decoration varied from plain ascetic Georgian styles through engraved neoclassical, and heavily engraved or chased Victorian examples. The wine cup interiors were often gold-gilt as some people with sensitive pallets could taste the influence of silver in their wine.
Antique Silver GOBLETS collectors note:
The level of craftsmanship and their aesthetic qualities determine their value. Unusual shapes or engraved scenes, and forms command the highest prices. Many silver goblets were engraved with crests or monograms and then later removed so always check the bowl walls for thin spots. They must also be undamaged with good clear hallmarks and crisp detail.
