Antique Silver CHRISTENING SETS description:
A set of silver intended as a gift to a child on the occasion of their christening.
Antique Silver CHRISTENING SETS history:
A Victorian invention made popular by Queen Victoria who often gave her young relations boxed gifts on there christenings and birthdays. They are still being made today.
Antique Silver CHRISTENING SETS design:
A christening set consisted of various items in various combinations of spoon, fork, knife, mug, and bowl. They were often sold in velvet and satin-lined presentation boxes.
Antique Silver CHRISTENING SETS collectors note:
The early Victorian christening sets are now difficult to find in original condition as they were often split up over the years. Make sure that all items are hallmarked with the same maker, town, and date letter. Be especially careful to check if there are any thin spots due to engraving and erasing, as this may have been carried out a number of times. Unusually designed and/or early sets command the highest prices, especially if they are in their original presentation boxes.
