Antique Georgian sterling silver bougie-box, having a cylindrical body with bright-cut engraved bands of decoration, a flat invisibly hinged lid, an attached sickle moon-shaped wax trimmer, and a hinged buckle style loop handle. Made by Thomas Phipps and Edward Robinson II of London in 1785. Please note that the hallmark also includes a rare incuse duty mark (George III looking left), which was only in use for 18 months (between 1st December 1784 and 29th May, 1786). The dimensions of this fine hand-made silver bougie-box are diameter 5 cms (2 inches), height 2.5 cms (1 inch), and it weighs approx. 53g (1.7 troy ounces). |
