Antique Silver NAPKIN RINGS description:
A silver napkin ring is a small ring of silver used to hold a rolled table napkin.
Antique Silver NAPKIN RINGS history:
There are very few Georgian examples left, and the vast majority of silver napkin rings were made after 1850. They are still being made today.
Antique Silver NAPKIN RINGS design:
Most silver napkin rings were circular but there are many other examples in various forms, such as elliptical, hexagonal, or figural. Antique silver napkin ring are often found in sets varying from two through to twelve. They were used regularly and were often designed to impress. Therefore silversmiths were asked to create more and more impressive designs based on stylised engraving, heavy chasing, or applied castings. They were often engraved with place setting numbers, or family monograms.
Antique Silver NAPKIN RINGS collectors note:
The level of craftsmanship and their aesthetic qualities determine their value. Unusual shapes, scenes, and forms of silver napkin rings command the highest prices. But they must also be undamaged with good clear silver hallmarks, and crisp detail. Many were boxed which has helped to keep them in good condition.
