Antique Silver JEWELRY BOXES description:

A type of covered box used for holding items of jewelery, often placed on a dressing table.

Antique Silver JEWELRY BOXES history:

There are rare examples of early Jewel boxes that were made as part of a toilet service, and these were sometimes called caskets. But the vast majority of what most people consider jewelery boxes were made from the latter part of the 19th century and are still being made today.

Antique Silver JEWELRY BOXES design:

They were made in various styles and sizes but they are all characterised by a hinged lid and lined interior. They were often decorated with hand-engraving or floral hand-chasing. Sometimes they can be found sitting on small feet. They are usually lined with matching coloured velvet and/or satin. Some of the larger boxes contained compartments for various types of jewelery including ring slots.

Antique Silver JEWELRY BOXES collectors note:

Many of the older jewelery boxes are now in fairly bad condition especially the interiors. Check to make sure that the hinge is in good condition and has not been repaired. Make sure that any legs have not been damaged and then badly repaired. If the box has engine-turned decoration make sure that the surface has not been dented. Check for thin spots on the lids and bodies especially around any vacant cartouches.
