Antique Silver HAND MIRRORS description:
A small mirror set in a frame with a long handle, often used at a dressing table, and sometimes part of a dressing table or toilet service.
Antique Silver HAND MIRRORS history:
Although originally part of a toilet service, these original hand mirrors from the early 18th century are incredibly rare now. Infact any hand mirror from the Georgian period is a rare find for obvious reasons. The vast majority of hand mirrors are from the late Victorian and 20th century periods. Anything hallmarked pre-1850 should be treasured and kept in good condition. They are still being made today.
Antique Silver HAND MIRRORS design:
Their design followed the same basic form with a round, oval, or rectangular frame holding a mirror, together with a long handle. The decoration again followed period styles ranging from heavy ornate floral work in the Victorian period through very plain Art Deco styles from the 1920s and 30s.
Antique Silver HAND MIRRORS collectors note:
Unusual hand mirrors from the Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, or Art Deco periods are very sought after and command higher prices. However, condition is paramount. The mirror should be in good condition with no damage to the surface. Any old or antique hand-mirror with a flat (non-bevelled) piece of glass would have had its mirror replaced. Look closely at corners and any high points on the decoration to check for holes and damage. Make sure that the hand mirror does not rattle when moved. If it does then this means that the interior packing material needs to be replaced. Unfortunately many old hand mirrors are now in bad condition and it is often not worth repairing them.
