Antique Silver CHRISTENING MUGS description:
A type of mug given to a child as a christening present.
Antique Silver CHRISTENING MUGS history:
Very few examples remain from the 18th century and the vast majority were made in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Antique Silver CHRISTENING MUGS design:
There design reflected the style of the period they were made in. Early 19th century examples were usually fairly plain with the classic straight-sided and reeded engraved versions being fairly common. Later ones, during the Victorian period were often engraved and hand-chased with flowers and scenes. The early part of the 20th century saw copies of Georgian tankard styles with plain bodies perhaps having applied strapwork. But whatever the style they were always similar in construction having a main body, collett or pedestal foot, and side handle.
Antique Silver CHRISTENING MUGS collectors note:
Early 18th century examples are rare, figural Victorian versions are very sought after, especially by collectors. But whatever their style they should be in crisp condition with clear hallmarks. Check the cartouche for thin spots as many christening mugs have been engraved and then erased a number of times. Make sure that there is no repair where the handle meets the body.
