ANTIQUE SILVER CAKE STANDS
Antique Silver cake stands Description:
Either a large flat round stand for displaying wedding cakes, or a two / three tiered frame holding plates for serving smaller cakes.
Antique Silver cake stands History:
A Victorian invention, the first stands appearing in ca. 1850. Most were made in the Victorian period but they are still being made today.
Antique Silver cake stands Design:
The wedding cakes stands were nearly always round and often have chased decoration on their sides consisting of floral swags and bells to go with the wedding cake theme. The smaller cake stands were either two or three tiered frames with a carrying handle and having removable plates for serving the smaller tea cakes. The Victorian examples often had peirced edges or floral borders, but 20th century versions are quite plain.
Antique Silver cake stands Collectors Note:
The vast majority of cake stands were made in silver plate. Solid silver ones are very rare. For the tea-cake stands look closely at the frame to make sure that there are no repairs, and make sure that the plates are original to the frame. Good quality fancy cake stands with fine decoration command the highest prices.
